How to Make a LEGO®-Style Portrait From Your Own Photo

I have to admit… when my husband gave me a bricked portrait of myself, my first thought was:

"That looks really cool… but how on earth do you even make something like this?"

A few evenings later, I had my answer.

And honestly? It was much more fun than I expected.

It All Starts With One Photo

The whole idea is surprisingly simple.

You pick your favorite photo—maybe from a holiday, your family, your pet, or just a selfie you actually like—and it gets turned into a LEGO mosaic.

A few days later a box arrived at our house.

Inside were dozens of little bags, each with a different color of bricks and a number on the front. At first it looked a bit overwhelming. There were way more colors than I expected.

But after opening the instructions it all started to make sense.

No sorting, no guessing. Just grab the bag with the right number and keep building.

It Feels Like Paint-by-Numbers… With Bricks

The best comparison I can think of is paint-by-numbers.

Except instead of paint, you're clicking little bricks into place.

At first it doesn't look like much. You're placing random colors and thinking, "Is this really going to become a face?"

Then after a while… an eye appears.

A nose.

The outline of your hair.

And suddenly you can actually recognize the photo.

That was probably my favourite moment.

I didn't finish it in one sitting. I built a little bit every evening after work, made a cup of tea, put on some music, and just kept going. It became one of those projects where you tell yourself "just one more section"… and somehow another hour disappears.

Tiny Bricks, Big Difference

One thing I noticed is how different it looks depending on where you're standing.

Up close, it's just lots of tiny coloured bricks.

Take three or four steps back, though, and everything suddenly comes together. It's almost like your brain does the final bit of editing.

I caught myself walking backwards a few times just to see it appear again.

The Last Few Bricks

The funny thing is that the closer I got to finishing it, the slower I started building.

Not because it became difficult.

Because I didn't really want it to end.

There's something strangely satisfying about watching the picture slowly come to life, one little brick at a time.

And Then… Done!

The final brick clicked into place, we hung it on the wall, took a few steps back…

…and just smiled.

It genuinely looks better on the wall than I imagined while I was building it.

Now every time someone visits, they notice it within a few minutes. Most people walk over, have a closer look, then step back again to see how the image changes.

I still catch myself doing exactly the same thing.

Looking back, the building was almost as enjoyable as the finished result.

And the finished LEGO portrait? It has become one of my favourite things in the house.

Not just because it's a picture of me, but because every little brick reminds me of the evenings spent putting it together.

I can honestly say it's one of the nicest gifts I've ever received from my husband. ❤️
